In search of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying form of life in space. Director Federico Alvarez explains the rule he established for “Alien: Romulus” that “if it can be practical, it will be practical,” so the actors always acted against the physical representation of the xenomorph. Director Federico Alvarez sought out the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on these creatures. Physical scenery, real creatures and miniatures were used wherever possible to aid further work on visual effects. Weightlessness in real life causes liquids to take on the shape of spheres and not spread out into long flat pieces like in the movie. The characters are for the most part completely inert and have no real personality, except for Andy. To be honest, I had no emotional connection to most of the characters and most of them were just annoying and stupid. The film was lackluster at times, seemed to take forever to get going, and relied too much on Alien franchise clichés to give the plot and script any real flavor. The special effects were pretty good and the design of the original xenomorph was excellent, although the facelifts in this movie look worse than in Alien and Aliens for some reason. Don’t get too excited by the current hype surrounding Romulus, it’s not a terrible movie, but it’s not great either. As a big fan of the original, I went away disappointed. Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping dystopias, or making the world a better place, these women are what science fiction is all about.
