In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to shoot an adult film on a rural Texas farm. But when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew must fight for their lives. The day after the premiere of “X” (2022) at “South by Southwest,” writer-director Ti West revealed that he had written a prequel called “Pearl” (2022) during a mandatory two-week COVID-19 quarantine at his New Zealand hotel before production on that film could begin. A24 saw the script and greenlit the film before production on “X” even wrapped, asking star Mia Goth if she wanted to stay in New Zealand and shoot “Pearl,” and she readily accepted the offer. The prequel was later released in 2022. When Lorraine enters the basement and turns on the light, there is a modern halogen lightbulb, which did not exist in 1979. I had no expectations or knowledge whatsoever about this film when I turned it on. I knew it was a horror film and that was it. When I watched it, I could feel the love the creators had for the old age of horror films, the era of slashers and all the things Scream once dissected and made light of, an age of horror film rules where you expect sex to equal death and for the final girl to overcome all odds and take on the horrific entity terrorizing her. The idea of this film strikes me as something I would have really enjoyed. The reality was rather disappointing. I could never connect with the characters, and when things started going wrong, I had no interest in their existence. They were just red shirts in a horror movie. I expected them to die, and most of them lived up to that expectation. It was fine. It never really tipped the scales toward love, never toward hate, it lingered in the realm of quiet acceptance of what was going on, a positive tolerance that never led to real enjoyment.
