Synopsis
A group of young space colonists encounter the most terrifying life form in space while scavenging the depths of an abandoned space station. So the actors always worked against the physical representation of the xenomorph. Director Fede Alvarez recruited the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on these creatures. Wherever possible, physical sets, practical creatures and miniatures were used to inform later VFX work.

When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all of their blood floats in the air in long, blurry patterns. . Real-life weightlessness causes fluids to take on spherical shapes rather than spreading out into long, flat pieces like in the movies. The fanfare of the 20th Century Studios freezes and changes ominously, as in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the film’s opening scene.

Because it brings together most of the notable elements that have made the franchise so popular over the years (cf. (through subtle elements, characters or plot lines) to the various films in the series… It’s obviously a product of our modern times (film techniques, effects), but for the most part retains the classic atmosphere and tone of Alien films. ..The visual language is overall quite excellent here – there are some really remarkable shots (great framing and composition)…

Yes, it might disappoint some who feel like they have ownership of the franchise, because it definitely expands and explores the lore quite a bit (which is something I personally look for in sci-fi sagas that span decades)… Plus, the lead actress (Cailee Spaeny) carries the film really well, with quiet power, subtlety, and intensity… So if you’re looking for an Alien movie that uses most of the old ingredients, but reintroduces and/or reinvents them and explores more than we’ve ever done… Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping dystopias, or making the world a better place, these women are what sci-fi is all about.
